Don’t Leave Home! Why Ageing in Place is the Key to Ageing Well

They say home is where the heart is. It’s the place where we’re surrounded by all of the things we love, treasured memories and comfort and familiarity. But what happens when living at home isn’t as safe and easy as it once was?

In the past, the only option for many people was to move into a nursing home. The thought of this, particularly in the current climate, is generally not a pleasant one. Leaving the place where you’re the most comfortable and uprooting your life to move into residential aged care, or downsize to a smaller and more manageable property, can be frightening and overwhelming. Because of this, many people ignore the little signs that suggest help is becoming necessary and may decline even further.

Don’t leave home! Why ageing in place is the key to ageing well

Thankfully, things are changing and nursing homes are no longer the only option. Home Care, where you or your loved one can receive care and services at home, is becoming the most popular choice for Australians.

How Can I Access Free Home Care Support?

One of the very best tools that will offer sustainable and long-term support, is to get started with a Home Care Package. There is surprisingly generous government funding (up to $52,000 per year!) available to help people over the age of 65 to stay living at home. It’s called the Home Care Package program. A Home Care Package is a financial package provided by the federal government that can be used for any services that will help you or your loved one to remain living safely at home.

Who Qualifies for a Home Care Package?

If you are over 65 years of age, an Australian resident, and require some help at home, you can apply to be assessed for a Home Care Package.
