New York Re-visited

New York Re-visited

We travelled to New York City in 2012 and we were so captivated by this US metropolis that we had to return and immerse ourselves even more into the hustle and bustle and fervour of this fascinating place.

St Thomas: Blackbeard, Bluebeard & Bounty

St Thomas: Blackbeard, Bluebeard & Bounty

As I wandered through the streets and laneways of Charlotte Amalie I spied what I thought was a pirate ship in the harbour, and it took me back to those pirate days of swashbuckling, swordfighting and hornswaggling.

Sint Maarten & Saint Martin

Sint Maarten & Saint Martin

Can you believe two countries on one island? There is Sint Maarten on the Dutch side and Saint Martin on the French side, of this Caribbean island in the Antilles Island group. The 87-square-kilometre island is divided roughly 61/39 between France 53 km2 and the Kingdom of the Netherlands 34 km2,the two parts are roughly equal in population. St…

Colourful & Curious Curacao

I think the most curious thing about Curacao, the sixth stop on our cruise, is the Queen Emma Pontoon Bridge, which joins Punta to Otrabanda districts in the capital of Willemstad. Also known as the “Swinging Old Lady,” it swings open using two powerful ship motors, allowing ships to access the port. So you can be…

Aruba: ¡Arriba! ¡Arriba!

Aruba: ¡Arriba! ¡Arriba!

Remember in the cartoons when Speedy Gonzales of Looney Tunes fame would race around crying out  ¡Arriba! ¡Arriba!? I found out that this common Mexican saying roughly translates to a good old Lleighton Hewitt “come on”! Although not even remotely Mexican, Aruba, a tiny Dutch Caribbean island off the coast of Venezuela, with its azure blue seas lapping…

Costa Maya- ¡Me vale madres!

“¡Me vale madres”! or “I couldn’t care less!”, pretty much summed up the small tourist region of Costa Maya. It is in the state of Quintana Roo, on the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, the only state bounded by the Caribbean Sea to its east and was the fourth stop on our cruise. The modern cruise port consists of a…

Roatán: Pirate’s Paradise

Roatán: Pirate’s Paradise

Roatán is the largest of Honduras’ Bay Islands located roughly 56 kms off the north coast of Honduras in Central America and was stop number three on our cruise.  Long and thin (50km long but only 2km to 4km wide), the island is a real diving and snorkeling mecca – virtually its entire coastline is fringed by an…

Basking in Belize!

The second port of call on our Caribbean cruise was to the second smallest country in Central America, Belize. All ships anchor in Belize City harbour and passengers are whizzed from ship to shore via speedy Belizean tenders which takes approximately 20 minutes to tender ashore. Interesting Fact: Belize is the only English language-speaking country in Central America….

Cozumel: Mayans and Mariachis

Cozumel: Mayans and Mariachis

After we departed the Mississippi River Port of New Orleans on our cruise ship, the Norwegian Dawn, we cruised 160 kms down the river into the Gulf Of Mexico. Following a night and a full day of cruising we arrived at our first port of call, Cozumel. Cozumel is a mostly undeveloped island in the…
