My Updated Travel Bucket List

Travel bucket lists or wish lists – you either love them or don’t bother! However when I get together with friends we mostly talk about places we have travelled and where we intend to travel next. And because I am a travel writer I tend to subscribe to a lot of other travel blogs and travel sites because I love to learn about new and exciting travel destinations.

In December 2014 I prepared this travel bucket list of all the places I would like to travel to in the world. During the past 3 years I have been fortunate to tick five more, of the original 16 places, off my list of 25 – Mexico & Caribbean cruise, Cinque Terre & Amalfi Coasts in Italy, Mediterranean Cruise, Laos, and Tasmania. Plus I have travelled to Japan (but not to ski) and I did manage to visit one place in Cambodia in 2016 on our South East Asian cruise. So maybe I could get half a tick each for these two!

Singapore-Cruise

My Travel Bucket List in 2017

1.  See Paris and climb the Eiffel Tower

2.  Tour London on a Double Decker Bus

3.  Road trip around Ireland

4.  Visit Prague

5.  Cycle in the countryside of France

6.  Walk the trails of Cinque Terre & tour the Amalfi Coast of Italy

 √

7.  Visit North Queensland, the Great Barrier Reef and The Daintree Forest

8.  Cruise the Greek Islands

9.  Take a Mediterranean Cruise

 √

10. Drive the Great Ocean Road

11. Travel to Vietnam and cruise Ha Long Bay

12. Travel to Cambodia and Laos

 √

13. Ski in Japan

14. Take the Ghan Train through Central Australia

15. Road trip through the Rocky Mountains and skiing in Canada

16. See New York and San Francisco

17. Snorkel with sea turtles in Maui and surf at Waikiki Beach

18. Sunset drinks in Bali

19. Holiday in Phuket and trek on elephants through the forest

20. Travel around Australia in a caravan

21. Cruise around Mexico and the Caribbean Sea

 √

22. Drive around Tasmania and Freycinet National Park

 √

23. Visit New Zealand – ski its mountains and jet boat its rivers

24. See the spectacle of the Grand Canyon & Las Vegas

25. Shop in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur

Penang-Malaysia

However, like a lot of other people’s travel bucket lists, mine keeps growing and changing with the times. These are the places I would like to add to the above list:

26.  Cruise the Hawaiian Islands and French Polynesia

27.  Visit the Scandinavian countries in Europe

28.  Go to Spain and Portugal

29.  Travel to South America to Peru, Bolivia, Brazil and Chile.

30.  Caravan around Northern Australia (the parts we missed on our trip in 2014)

The exciting thing is that we have recently booked a Hawaiian & French Polynesian cruise for 2019 and intend spending some time travelling in our caravan this year,  so that will tick at least one more place off my list!

Machu Picchu in Peru is on my Bucket List

Machu Picchu in Peru is on my Bucket List

When I talk to other travellers and adventurers I do get extremely itchy feet when they start to tell me about some parts of the world that they have experienced, that I have never been to. Also when I see a couple of grey nomads towing a caravan up the highway I get that wanderlust feeling and it reminds me of the seven carefree months that I spent on the road travelling around Australia. Aah, they were the days!

It got me asking myself some important questions like: Will I ever be content to stay in one place for too long? Will I ever lose this wanderlust feeling? As I get older will I lose the urge and the energy to want to travel?

world-travel-quotes

These are very pertinent questions to ask yourself, because none of us know how long we have on this earth and whether we will have our health or the means to be able to travel. Talking to people my age (the over 50s), we all agree on one thing and that is we should travel overseas while we are still physically able to, prior to maybe taking trips within our own country Australia. This does make sense.

It is therefore a good idea to draft up that travel bucket list, even if it is just to dream, because we all need something to look forward to in life!

How is your Travel Bucket List going? Do you intend to travel overseas while you still can or would you prefer to travel within your own country?

I would love to travel through central Australia on the Ghan. That’s definitely on my list. As well as see the Northern Lights. You’ve done well with ticking things off Kathy.

We’ve been on the Ghan and it was amazing. We have done a good job of ticking places off, but my husband is saying after next year there will be no more holidays to Europe, so I will have to make the most of our trip to Italy. The Northern Lights would be wonderful to see. :)

I’d love to do either the Ghan or India Pacific, but they are so expensive especially when compared to cruises! I’m keen to see some of the US and Canada hopefully on our next trip!

When we went on the Ghan years ago we found an internet special so it wasn’t very expensive at all. It was such a great way to see the centre of Australia, rather than do it by car. It’s crazy that we have to spend so much money to travel domestically when we can travel cheaply on a cruise or to South East Asia. No wonder people don’t travel within Australia. US and Canada are amazing and should be on everyone’s bucket list. :)

Yep, you had me at the title! I love a good bucket list & especially a travel bucket list. We’re not planning much at the moment while we work out what’s happening with hubby & whether he’ll find more work & if not how we afford that, but my restlessness knows no bounds.

    • Kathy
      February 1, 2018

Neither does mine Jo. I wish I could be satisfied with the amount of holidays and travel that I already do, but I still feel as though I want more! Maybe it’s the immortality thing kicking in.

We have a list that we lovingly call “Our List.” (There’s no bucket involved – because neither of us want to consider “kicking the bucket.” The rules of our list are simple…If either of us begins a sentence with, “I wanna…”, that item goes on the list. It doesn’t necessarily have to be about travel, although many items are. Sometimes it’s just an experience – swim with dolphins, ride in a hot air balloon, go ziplining through a tropical jungle (with monkeys or parrots). The point is, we will spend the rest of our lives trying to cross items off our list. Thanks for letting me check out yours! ~ Lynn

    • Kathy
      February 1, 2018

Yes experiences are just as important as holidays Lynn. I think I would need another list of at least a hundred items for my “experiences wish list”. There’s still so much more that I would love to achieve. I love that you add to your “I wanna” list frequently. #TeamLovinLife

Hi Kathy, My travel list is robust, both where I’ve been and where I want to go next. I’ll keep traveling as long as I can. This year I plan some trips overseas and some in Canada. I’ll be going to Chile in March.

    • Kathy
      February 1, 2018

I’m happy to hear this Natalie. I have been to Canada twice and loved the place. Chile would is also on my bucket list. Happy travels! #TeamLovinLife

What a fabulous list and you’ve done well to tick off as many as you have! I am a long, long, long way behind and don’t think I’ll ever travel to all those places. I hope to get to a few overseas places though before I cark it!! #TeamLovinLife

    • Kathy
      February 1, 2018

Ha ha! I’m sure you will Min. We have been on a bit of a “travel frenzy”, but this year we won’t be doing too much, particularly overseas travel. My husband isn’t so keen on some of places on my list so we will see if they ever eventuate.

  • Jan Wild
    February 1, 2018

Like you our list keeps getting longer and longer and with our move this year an overseas trip is off the radar, although we get seriously tempted by special fares as they flood in. Ireland and Canada are next on our list.

    • Kathy
      February 1, 2018

We get tempted all the time Jan by travel special deals. However we also have a lot on our plate this year and will need to stay home and consolidate a little. Our caravan trip and maybe a few weekends away here and there will be about it for 2018. #TeamLovinLife

I love a good bucket list AND that yours keeps expanding. Perfect. We are heading through to Vegas this year for a birthday party {yup} and back to NZ by the end of the year, hopefully to visit friends. I really need to make a bucket list, we really only ever seen to go to the places we need to go. hmmmm….

    • Kathy
      February 1, 2018

Yes mine does seem to keep expanding! Whether I get to all of these places is a different matter. I have too many friends that are travelling to interesting places putting up their spectacular photos on Facebook. I’ll have to stop looking at them! Vegas will be a blast and NZ is always enticing. #TeamLovinLife

I love looking at your blog Kathy because the photos are gorgeous and you always tempt me to start planning my next trip. You have done so much travelling and I love that you share your travels with us. I need to revisit my own photos and memories now that you have inspired me. We have Alaska/Canada, South America, Vietnam/Cambodia and Tassie on the immediate bucket list. Have a great holiday!

    • Kathy
      February 1, 2018

Now there’s some amazing places! South America is one place that I would also love to see. As I’m currently caravanning around NSW I should be satiated, but I always feel like I want more. There’s just too many wonderful places in the world. #TeamLovinLife

I’m nowhere near as keen to travel as you obviously. I’m much more of a homebody. I’m just looking forward to not-working in my retirement.

However – as you know – I’m off to Italy which is really the only place I’d like to visit later this year. I’m not sure if that will give me the travel bug or not. I travelled in SE Asia in the late 1990s as I lived in Cambodia for 7-8mths and a little around Southern Africa as I lived there in the mid 90s. I went to several Pacific Island countries when I worked in aid and development but other than that have had little interest in travel.

Perhaps Alaska in terms of a place I’d like to see….

    • Kathy
      February 1, 2018

You will Love, Love, Love Italy Deb. I could live there tomorrow! I agree that travel may not be to everyone’s taste, but it certainly adds excitement and adventure to your life. Alaska would be amazing.

It’s fabulous that you keep going while you can. Who knows what the future will bring, but for now, bring it on!!

True Jodie. We don’t know what’s around the corner so will certainly be trying to make the rest of our lives the best we can. Although I don’t particularly consider myself to be that old! Yes I agree – bring it on! #TeamLovinLife

Some people are travel lovers – others not so much. I think I fit in the latter category atm but that might change when we retire and have more chunks of time. I always enjoy hearing other people’s stories but for the moment I feel like I’ve seen enough of Europe and the Asian countries to satisfy me and I’m happy being a home body. Bring on retirement and I’m sure the bucket list will start then.

    • Kathy
      February 1, 2018

I hope so Leanne. We have been in semi-retirement for 4 years so have had the opportunity to travel and make the most of our spare time. I realise that travel is not the “be all” for some people, but it certainly brings back excitement and adventure into your life. #TeamLovinLife

I should write down where I want to travel to. There are so many places and we need to be more adventurous.

      February 5, 2018

I think it is a good idea to write a travel bucket list as it gives you something to aspire to. It’s fun ticking the places off! #TeamLovinLife

Wow Kathy, that’s quite a list! I admire how many destinations you’ve already been able to tick off too. I must make a list as well – I have quite a few places I’d like to visit :) #TeamLovinLife

    • Kathy
      February 5, 2018

It is a big list and seems to keep growing! Hopefully I will be able to get to most of these places before I get too old.

Ok great thank you. I’m aiming on getting to Portugal within the next few years so will make a note of your hotel recommendation. Thanks for dropping by. #TeamLovinLife

Hi Kathy great list. We have been to some of them but so many more to see. Visiting Prague later in the year so that’s one more crossed off for us. Our list keeps growing as well. So many places to see in this big world.

    • Kathy
      February 7, 2018

Prague is also on my list and I will hopefully get to explore this wonderful old city one day. There are so many fabulous places to see in this big wide world of ours. #TeamLovinLife

Ha ha! I guess I am very spoilt as far as travel goes. You time will come, once your kids get a little older I’m sure.
