Succumbing to Sixty

Succumbing to Sixty

It’s time to face up to it! I’ve been in denial for quite a while now and as the time is fast approaching (in 2 weeks time to be precise), I have to finally accept that my fabulous fifties are over and I’m going to be sixty. OMG did I really say that out loud!! With a lot of reluctance and maybe some kicking and screaming, I will be succumbing to sixty.

Where did this last decade go? I keep asking myself. It only seems like yesterday that I was planning a 50th birthday celebration and secretly being mortified that I was turning this age. How did I get so old? I don’t particularly feel it, except for when I experience a few aches and pains in my body, I forget something important or I have to pee every 5 minutes. I feel fine – truly I do!

The other dilemma is do I change the name of my blog to 60 Shades of Age? Nah, it just doesn’t have the same ring to it! I think I will leave the name alone (not that I’m going to still pretend I’m in my fifties or anything!)

I spent a good deal of time poring over photos from the last decade and trying to put them in chronological order which was a huge challenge. Some of my older photos have no dates and aren’t in the nice neat folders that I put them into these days. Even my passport was no help as I renewed it in 2013 and I threw the old one out.

As I reflect on the last decade, I do notice some subtle changes in my appearance (although my hair colour and hairstyle are pretty much the same), and I certainly have undergone many other changes, such as change of life, becoming an empty nester, change of career and changes in social groups.

Yes I do look older, I have gained some weight and I tend to sleep a lot more. The joys of ageing! However the biggest change in my fifties was quitting my job and travelling full-time around Australia that gave me a new found love of photography and travel blogging. It also resulted in me changing my career from being a Bookkeeper to a Web Writer.

Here are some the highlights of the decade of my fabulous fifties:

You’re looking fit and fabulous. Sending you an early happy birthday.

Thanks Jo. Sometimes I feel my age and at other times I feel 21 again! :) #TeamLovinLife

Oh wow Kathy, I love this. I might steal the idea for later in the year when I turn 50 but I’m wondering what I’d put in each year.

You’ve done and achieved so much during this time. (Mine would be… lost 20kg. Gained 30kg. Sort of thing!)

So much to show for those 10 years of living (and the 50 before that)!

    • Kathy
      January 19, 2017

Steal away Deb! It was a challenge trying to remember what I’d done in the last decade! Thankfully my photos prompted my memory. I’m hoping for a lot more “living the dream” in this next decade. Fingers crossed! :)

The last 10 years have been great! I hope you have a wonderful birthday.

Well you certainly made the most of that decade. By the way, sixty is the new forty. You look great and I have a feeling your next decade will be even better for you.

    • Kathy
      January 19, 2017

Becoming an empty nester, having the freedom to travel and have more “me time” certainly assisted in my fifties being fabulous. I like the idea of 60 being the new 40, but I think my ageing body is telling me otherwise! Lol :) #TeamLovinLife

What a wonderful reflection Kathy and I feel such a connection with you in many aspects. I am in 60 in August and I have just adjusted my website name to Sizzling Towards 60 & Beyond because no way am I not going to Sizzle once I’m the big 60! You have a great attitude and that is the key. We can all wallow about getting older and waste our lives or we can just forget about our age and make the most of life. A wonderful and uplifting post. Thanks for the link up as well. xx

    • Kathy
      January 19, 2017

Yes I am succumbing to sixty, even though I’m not entirely happy about it. I did Yoga with my 26 year old daughter this morning and felt the 59 years that I am! You obviously can empathise with how I feel. It’s like the sand in the hourglass is rapidly falling and there are so many more things I want to achieve in my life before I get too old. Let’s hope my next decade is a good one. :) #TeamLovinLife

Kathy you don’t look anywhere near 60! What a great decade you’ve had in your 50’s – WOW so much awesome travel! I’m still early 50’s – phew. Not quite got my head ready for the next big one yet! lol I’m sure your 60’s will be just as fab as your 50’s! Hope you celebrate big on your birthday in a couple of weeks. :-) x #TeamLovinLife

      January 19, 2017

Thanks Min, you are too kind. I am planning a small dinner out for my actual birthday with family and a few close friends. I’m not one for big parties or too much fanfare. My 60th birthday gift is the fantastic Mediterranean Cruise and 3 weeks in Italy that we have already booked. I can’t wait! :)

    January 19, 2017

Kathy you haven’t changed a bit and you look amazing -fresh faced and full of energy and enthusiasm. Oh and the 60s aren’t all bad – I should know! The best is still ahead of you 😉

    • Kathy
      January 19, 2017

Ha ha! Thank you Jan – I think you need glasses! I’m happy to hear that the best is still ahead of me. It is much better than the alternative! :) #TeamLovinLife

You look fabulous and you’ve accomplished so much in the last decade. The sky’s the limit for the next 10 years isn’t it? My 50’s are quite different – and my kids are several years older than yours, so mine had finished uni and were embarking on careers, getting married and mortgaged (and having a baby!) in my first half of the 50’s. You inspire for how then next half will look xxx

    • Kathy
      January 19, 2017

Thank you Leanne. I don’t really feel that much older than when I was fifty, however I have noticed that I get tired easily and I’m not quite as flexible as I used to be. I hope I’ve provided some inspiration for women in my age group. :) #TeamLovinLife

This is a wonderful decade you have captured and recalled! Many congratulations to you. I am only 3 years away from 70. THAT is scary!! Are you still working in NSW public education? I was until 2009 and was a principal in the early 2000s. Cheers, Denyse

    • Kathy
      January 19, 2017

It was a wonderful decade full of a lot of changes. Hopefully the next one will be a little calmer! I worked for Education Qld in admin for about 10 years off and on. It was very hard work but rewarding. Being a principal in the public education sector is a huge responsibility. Well done! :) #TeamLovinLife

What fun to see the last 10 years this way, Kathy!!
It only gets better, and I think that’s because we have the right perspective on life!!
    Happy Days!!

    • Kathy
      January 19, 2017

Thanks Jodie, it is definitely about the right perspective. I’m hoping and praying to be doing what I do now well into my 70s at least! :) #TeamLovinLife

So interesting and intriguing to see the highlights reel of your fifties! What a roller coaster of a wonderful decade it’s been! I hope the sizzling 60’s are equally as wonderful and may you stay fit, healthy and as beautiful as ever :)

    • Kathy
      January 19, 2017

Thanks Jo. I’m going to attack the next decade exactly as I tackled the last one! The one good thing is that I have more spare time to take care of myself and also to travel. Bring it on! :)

    January 19, 2017

No way are you turning 60 Kathy! I hope my next ten years from 50 to 60 are as filled with wonderful memories (especially the travel) as yours have been. You are an inspiration x

    • Kathy
      January 19, 2017

Yes I’ve got a good ten years on you Janet! You can definitely make your own memories and have a blast in your fifties and beyond. Thank you for your kind words. :) #TeamLovinLife

I just succumbed to 52 so have 8 years to ponder the arrival of the 60. xx N

I love your attitude Nikki! You are right, 60 is just a number and I’m definitely going to tackle it head on and embrace it for all that it is! :) #TeamLovinLife

Wow. What an amazing decade. I’m actually looking forward to embracing my 50s. My husband is already there and he arrived kicking and screaming. But it’s blog posts like this that make me excited to be hitting another decade of adventure.

I can’t believe you are turning 60. There is absolutely no way you could possibly be turning 60. 50 maybe, but not 60.

    • Kathy
      January 20, 2017

Thanks Leanne. You are too kind. When I reflect on the past decade it has been pretty amazing with so many changes. Although I’m not entirely happy about turning 60 I am looking forward to whatever the next decade brings me. :)

  • Lyndall @ Seize The Day Project
    January 20, 2017

Wow Kathy – what a fabulous decade you’ve had. Age is just a state of mind. I try not to focus on the numbers and just enjoy life. It looks like you’re already doing exactly that! Happy Birthday (no number!!) :) #TeamLovinLife

    • Kathy
      January 20, 2017

Age is a state of mind Lyndall. I’m really trying not to focus on the fact that I’m turning 60 but family and friends keep reminding me! I hope to be doing a lot more loving and travelling well into my sixties and seventies. :)

      January 20, 2017

Thanks Carol. It was a big move quitting our jobs to travel, but one that paid off for both of us. We were burnt out and disillusioned prior to setting off and the trip turned our lives around for the better. :) #TeamLovinLife

Gee thanks Mel! Some days I do feel old, but at other times I think and feel like I’m 21 again. The trick is to keep the mind and body active no matter your age. :) #TeamLovinLife
