Why I Write

I was recently invited to take part in a Blop Hop discussing the reasons why bloggers write and thought I would keep the baton moving and join in.  I was posed with five different questions and here are my replies:

1.   What am I working on?

I wish I was working on a best seller novel but unfortunately not!  As most of my loyal readers know I am currently grey nomading around Australia in a caravan so I am working on travel blogs on the places that I have visited along the way.

2.  How does my writing differ from others in its genre?

I like to think that I write about a whole range of topics that would appeal to a broad audience of 50 something year olds.  I don’t just focus on travel, fashion, beauty, health, fitness or diet for my age group but I delve into other topics like, “Is Shopping Better Than Sex?” and “What Happened to the Kitchen Tea?”. Riveting stuff really!

3.  Why I write?

Well, my Dad wrote an autobiography about his life years ago and I thought if he could write a book the least I could do is start up a little blog.  But seriously I started to write out of boredom and I could see a market for a blog for 50 years olds that would hopefully inspire all the middle-aged empty-nesters out there and help them to feel worthy and useful.

Me and my Dad – My Inspiration

4.  How does my writing process work?

I often get my inspiration from conversations with friends (which has actually landed me in deep poo poo a few times!), articles in newspapers and magazines or through simply observing life (aka as people watching!)  I carry around a little notebook with me which I often write down pieces of information for a story idea.  I also cut out articles in newspapers which I can use as a reference piece.

Sometimes the words for the stories just flow smoothly and easily from my brain, but at other times I have to do a bit of research on the topic.  Whilst I have been travelling I have found fellow travellers to be a wealth of information and also Visitor Centres in towns where I pick up travel brochures of the places I have visited.

5.  Who is next?

I’m passing the baton on to these three very talented bloggers:

  1. Johanna at www.lifestylefifty.com
  2. Rae Hilhorst at www.raeraeiopenedmymouthanditranawaywithoutme.com
  3. www.bmpermie.wordpress.com – chooses to remain anonymous

Thank you to my blogging friends Janet from www.middleagedmama.com.au  and Michelle from www.pinkypointer.com.au  for mentioning me in their blogs and inviting me to partake in this Blog Hop.

    That was very interesting Kathy.
Thank you for your generous comment. However I am not sure what I am suppose to do. Do I need to use the headings you used? I assume I link it to your blog as you did to those mentioned at the end of your post. Anything else?
I have not got to ping back yet. About time I learnt I guess. Tips for the dim would be appreciated.

Thank you for yours to:) All you need to do is respond to the 5 questions, and yes, link it to my blog. As for the title, you can change it you want. It’s not strictly a Blog Hop as normally you copy and paste from the website that is hosting the Blog Hop. It’s entirely up to you whether you want to participate.

I love reading about the processes other writers and bloggers employ and indeed why they write! Thanks for sharing and for inviting me on the linky :)

You are very welcome Jo. I think all of us bloggers have very different reasons for writing and I will be interested to hear what yours are.

It was interesting to read your reasons for writing, and I’m sure your father is tickled to know he’s your inspiration. Writing AND travelling sounds like a great adventure! I recently met a woman who travels overseas with her husband, teaching ESL. I think that would be fun too, but will have to uproot my husband… somehow.
I’ll enjoy catching up with the bloggers you’ve passed the baton to. :)

I’m glad you found my reasons interesting Susan. Travelling and writing about it is fantastic. I am going to be home in 4 short weeks and I don’t know what I write about then!

Great to read this although I remember we talked about writing lots that day we had a cuppa! I like your choices to pass it on to as well – though the last one is a new one to me, off to check it out now :-)

Thanks Janet. We all seem to have different reasons for writing but at the end of the day we are all fairly passionate about it and it shows.

It’s interesting how many of our fathers have influenced us isn’t it Kathy. A lovely read :)

Thanks Pinky. Although my Dad was a bit of a rascal I guess he did have a profound influence on me.
