Lakes Entrance, Gippsland Lakes
Australia’s largest and most beautiful inland waterways, the lovely Gippsland Lakes, are a network of lakes, marshes and lagoons covering 400 square kilometres. They are separated from the ocean with coastal dunes known as Ninety Mile Beach.
At the hub of the lakes system is Lakes Entrance, and as the name suggests it is situated at the entrance from the ocean to the lakes. Feast your eyes on the spectacular views from any point, night or day. Watch fishing boats returning with their catch and see the many local Pelicans, Black Swans and Seabirds.

It is no surprise that boaters flock from all over the world to experience the largest navigable inland waterway in Australia. Exploring all the inlets, rivers, arms and lakes of this incredible system needs to be done at a leisurely pace to truly appreciate the natural beauty. You can do so by a sailing charter boat, cruiser or by doing an eco day cruise aboard a ferry.

3. Catch the winery boat or drive out to nearby Wyanga Park Winery.
4. Check out the unique carved statues that line the foreshores of Lakes Entrance that are made out of cypress tree stumps and are a tribute to WWI soldiers.

5. Drive up to Jemmy’s Point Reserve that provides panoramic views of the Gippsland Lakes.
6. Eat out at one of Lakes Entrance fine waterfront eateries that serve local produce, fresh seafood and local wine.

7. Visit the nearby holiday retreat of Metung that is located on a crescent shaped peninsula reaching into Lake King and Bancroft Bay.
8. Walk or cycle around Lakes Entrance pathways and take in the birdlife and the busy wharf precinct where the fishing boats come in to unload their catch.

9. Ten kilometres north-west of Lakes Entrance, is Nyerimilang Heritage Park and Homestead, that exhibits the history of Nyerimilang and the natural resources and history of the Gippsland Lakes.
10. Naturally there is a wide range of water activities to be indulged in such as: water-skiing, paddle-boating, fishing, sailing, kayaking or surfing.

I always knew that the Gippsland Lakes would take my breath away, but I did not expect it to also earn a place in my heart. Simply stunning!

March 20, 2014We did buy a new Canon SLR camera with a zoom lens before we came away and it is working a treat. It makes my very ordinary photography skills look reasonably good! When you take about a hundred photos a day you do get better at it. Thanks for your kind words :)
