Lightning

The song that best describes the Australian Summer to me is the Sounds Of Then (This Is Australia) by Ganggajang.  The chorus goes like this:

“Out on the patio we’d sit,
And the humidity we’d breathe,
We’d watch the lightning crack over canefields
Laugh and think, this is Australia”

It beautifully captures the memory of sitting outside on our patio on a hot Summer night when there is a thunderstorm brewing and the humidity hits almost 100 percent.  Very Australian!

Other songs that I can remember that take me back to Summers of bygone times are:

Heat Wave – Martha and TheVandellas 1963

Surfin’ USA – The Beachboys 1963

Dancing In The Street – Martha and The Vandellas 1964

Under The Boardwalk – The Drifters 1964

California Girls  – The Beach Boys 1965

Summer In The City – The Lovin’ Spoonful 1966

Sunny Afternoon – The Kinks 1966

Here Comes The Sun – The Beatles 1969

In The Summertime – Mungo Jerry 1970

School’s Out For Summer – Alice Cooper 1972

Summer Nights – Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta 197811432968-biz-beachbaby-boomers-use-socialexaminercom

Cruel Summer  – Bananarama 1983

Suddenly Last Summer – The Motels 1983

Come Said The Boy – Mondo Rock 1983

The Boys Of Summer – Don Henley 1984

Walking On Sunshine – Katrina and the Waves 1985

Summer Of ’69 – Bryan Adams 1985
